The classic 1979 Vietnam War Film, Apocalypse Now, is looking to become a video game!
In 1979, the film Apocalypse Now was released to theatres. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the film received critical acclaim.
Now, thirty-eight years later, Coppola has the desire to see the world of his film transferred to the medium of video games.
Coppola originally had the idea of making the game and eight years ago his company, American Zoetrope, contacted game developer Rob Auten about making it a reality. However, this won’t be a typical first person shooter! It will not be the equivalent of a Call of Duty: Vietnam!
As described on the Kickstarter page:
Francis Ford Coppola is excited to announce the game adaptation of Apocalypse Now directed by Montgomery Markland, executive produced by Lawrence Liberty and written by Rob Auten.
The game will be an immersive, psychedelic horror RPG from the creators, designers, directors, writers and producers of Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, The Witcher, Neverwinter Nights 2, Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Everquest, DC Universe Online, PlanetSide, PlanetSide 2, Star Wars Galaxies and many more classic games.
This team of game development veterans have come together and obtained the approval of Francis Ford Coppola to bring Apocalypse Now to a new generation as a game.
We want your help because the traditional game publisher system won’t let this happen.
But you can Make It Happen.
Developer Kevin McCann further added his own comments to describe what they hope to achieve with the game.
Our ultimate goal is to transport you into the same atmosphere, psychology, and horror that the film experience delivered upon tremendously. Except this time, you’ll be Willard, and will fully control his every action – good, bad, or somewhere inbetween. And when you do step off the boat, are you willing to go all the way? Or will you try to your own approach? In Apocalypse Now, the choice will ultimately be yours.
The project requires $900,000 to become successfully funded. There are various rewards to be had with donations ranging from $35 to a whopping $10,000!
Be quick, the final date for pledging is February 24th.
Some proof of concept work has already been made and you can view the teaser video, which captures the feel of the film beautifully, at the Kickstarter page.
