Star Trek 2 Gets Dark

Posted by:

Star Trek 2 now officially has a title. Star Trek Into Darkness. While film sites and bloggers dissect the choice of title for the next instalment of JJ Abrams' franchise re-boot I find myself wondering what all the fuss is about. It's a Star Trek Into Darkness. Whatever...

This second instalment is inevitably touted as being darker in tone than the first while reports suggest that it will be packed to bursting with action, tackle some serious issues but also that actor Simon Pegg as 'Scotty' will feature more prominently as light relief.

Abrams did a spectacular job of re-invigorating Star Trek and restoring credibility to an ailing  franchise. He managed to blend elements of humour whilst maintaining the integrity of the characters, something that is so important to audiences these days. Do we need a darker Star Trek universe? I don't know. I felt the balance was just about right in the first film. Yes, there must be a natural progression in tone so as to avoid becoming terribly formulaic in the way the films were towards the end of the run of Next Generation instalments. But I do believe that there's room to achieve this with character development rather than plunging the crew into a dark and serious plot line at this point.

Time will tell.

Star Trek Into Darkness is due for release in 2013.
