The Batmobile

I love the Batman and I love the Batmobiles as you may have gathered from my previous articles. There has been "making of" material before on previous Blu-rays and DVDs dedicated to specific machines but this is the first time there has been a documentary dedicated to all of them. The sampler documentary first premiered at this year's San Diego Comicon and was also shown on the US network 'The CW' a few days later.  I finally got a chance to catch this twenty minute version just recently.

"The Batmobile" covers all the machines from the very beginning. From when Batman first appeared in Detective comics with a normal road car, right up to the Tumbler first introduced in Batman Begins. There are interviews with designers, builders, stunt drivers and the film's stars inter-cut with plenty of film and behind the scenes footage. Adam West tells of how Robin was "white knuckled" because he drove the car a little over the top so that it would look good on screen. Christian Bale only drove the Tumbler once and described it as like "Ozzy Osbourne screaming in your ear".

The documentary features some beautiful slow shots of all the Batmobiles where you can really appreciate the work and craftsmanship that went into building them. In my opinion the two Batmobiles from Batman Forever and Batman & Robin actually look better with all that horrible neon colouring turned off!

The sampler documentary has found its way onto YouTube and you can watch it below. I eagerly await the full length version that will be included as an extra on the Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray later this year. It will also be available for digital download.
