The MC Type - Bad Tattoos Vol.1

Posted by:
Formally known (to me at least) as plain old 'Type', it seems we should be referring to the Seattle based rapper/comedian as 'The MC Type' these days.

Type made waves on the Nerdcore Hip-Hop scene a few years ago when his song 'Junk Punter' appeared on the 'Nerdcore Lives Vol 1' compilation put together by Australian Rapper/Producer, Stevie Kincade. Flirting with the scene for a while, Type made his music available to download for free, something I took advantage of and have enjoyed ever since.

Having fallen off the radar for a while I'm glad to welcome The MC Type back onto my playlist with 'Bad Tattoos Vol.1'. We're treated to five tracks of professionally produced, light-hearted hip-hop.

Bad Tattoos Vol.1 is available to download for free via bandcamp.

Soup Or Villainz - Please Stand By

Posted by:
Please Stand By
Hot off the Scrub Club Records' Press here's a new EP from Soup Or Villainz, 'Please Stand By'.

It's short at only seven minutes and twenty six seconds, that's three zombie themed tracks.  'I'm A Zombie' is the catchiest of the three, 'Walking Dead' and 'Walkers' complete the track list. There's an eerie feel throughout and the final twenty seconds of the final track will catch you by surprise.

'Please Stand By' is available to download for free.

The Best Damn Nerd Show
Added to the Podcast Index is The Best Damn Nerd Show:

Output is split into two shows.  The regular shows focus on a variety of subjects from the new Thundercats cartoons to the latest movie releases.  The Movie Night shows see the nerds watch a film and then discuss it.  Films are not necessarily recent and appear to be chosen by the hosts in rotation.  The production quality of the show isn't as good as some but it's still very listenable.

No Celebrations - We're English [Happy Birthday ZX Spectrum]

Posted by:
It's St George's Day in England. Unless you've used google.co.uk, you may not know. The google calendar on my phone told me this morning, but we're all going about our business as usual. There's no national, public holiday to honour our patron saint. We don't dare celebrate being English, it conjures up images of the terrible things 'we've' done historically as an evil empire that conquered the world.  Or of football hooligans running rampage in Europe during the eighties. To fly the St George's Cross at any time other than a major football tournament as good as brands you as a supporter of the British Nationalist Party.

Many will have joined in with St Patrick's Day celebrations alongside our Irish brethren but for most today will pass much as any other day.

But there is something of English origin we can be proud of on the 23rd of April 2012. Born in Surrey in 1940, British inventor, Clive Sinclair, released the ZX Spectrum to the mass market thirty years ago today.

"A small, black, plastic box with rubber keys that you could plug into your TV.  This was the first affordable mass market home computer.  The Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
Suddenly you had the ability to load programs and games via a standard cassette recorder or for the hardcore user, programme yourself.  Specialist publications became available which printed code that could be typed character by character, line by line into the computer.  You could literally code a game yourself. [Player 1]"
So as an Englishman I can proudly say, Happy Birthday, ZX Spectrum. I have many happy memories of time spent with you. And quietly I'll tip a nod to St George, the Syrian Palestinian born patron saint of England.

K. Flay - Billboard Interview

Posted by:
K. Flay
K. Flay chats with billboard.com about her background, influences, touring, musical direction and Kanye West.
"To me rap was a method of delivery in line with a weird vision I had for something. In a way I never really knew what I was doing, so I just kind of flew by the seat of my pants. I definitely consider myself a rapper in some senses, but I think that I'm kind of just doing music and rap is the medium."

Nerdcore Meow - Season 3

Nerdcore Meow Season 3
Following a short break, Chadley, Macy and Beaker return to the interwebs with the Season 3 premier of the Nerdcore Meow podcast.  Props to Jesus H Macy for hitting me and a few others up with a sneaky preview a day or so before the show goes public.

YT Cracker is an engaging special guest for the season opener who lets slip which nerd rappers he's collaborating with on forthcoming projects. Music breaks come from YT Cracker himself, Mikal kHill, Tribe One and Random.

The show now has a regular format with the guys getting slicker by the episode.  They also seem to have resolved the massive difference in volume between the talking and music which makes the it far more listenable.  Check their website for past shows or subscribe via iTunes.

Super Mario Bros High Heels

Posted by:
Hand Painted Mario Shoes
We've already seen Mario Converse, but what about something for the nerd girl with a more refined taste in fashion?  Super Mario Bros high heels of course!

Jamie Ferraioli hand paints the designs via her online Etsy store for between £74 and £103 (approximately $117 and $163) under the username, Magicbeanbuyer.

But note, that price does not include the shoes!  You need to supply the footware and discuss your design in advance. Based in Carrboro, NC it could set you back you an awful lot in shipping costs to get a pair like these here in the UK.

Epic Mario - A LEGO Level of Super Mario Bros

Posted by:
LEGO Mario
Zachary Pollock is a big fan of two things, Super Mario Bros and LEGO.  It's no coincidence then that he's combining these hobbies and attempting to create a six feet tall by ninety feet wide LEGO mosaic of the entire  level 1-1 of Super Mario Bros.

Using LEGO studs (a 'flat one-er' when I was a kid) Pollock intends to replicate the level on a scale of one stud to one pixel using almost 780,000 individual LEGO pieces, and that many studs costs a lot of money.

Pollock is hoping to fund the project with a kickstarter campaign. Looking for backing to the tune of $26,400 the campaign has 24 days left to run and only $1423.00 pledged this far.  The majority of the total needed will go towards buying the huge quantity of bricks, but also the raw materials needed to mount and display the piece.

If successful and once complete the project will be displayed at the BrickCon 2012 Expo in Seattle and as many other conventions as possible thereafter.

Richie Branson sent me a sneak peek at what he's working on for his next project and announced his intention to introduce the world to Otaku culture. Have a listen, don't be afraid to look up what Otaku means (I had to).

Not content with just making a name for himself on the Nerdcore scene, Branson's aiming to present a mainstream sound with nerdy content that will crack the mass market.

Tribe One - anamanaGANGSTA / Devil Rhymeosaur

Posted by:
anamanaGANGSTA
Tribe One unleashes 'anamanaGANGSTA / Devil Rhymeosaur', a six track EP influenced by and, in part, a tribute to the music of the band, Anamanaguchi:
"Everybody has that one band that they're completely sure is making music just for them. For me, Anamanaguchi is that band. I feel like all their songs are gifts to me, so this is my gift to them and to you."
The ever-present Adam Warrock lends his vocals to track two, 'Midlife Crisis'.  'I Will Make You Believe In Me' is the stand-out for me showcasing Tribe One's ability to spit fast rhymes.

AnamanaGANGSTA / Devil Rhymeosaur, is available to download for free via bandcamp. See the link below. Props also to Rusty Shackles for one of the best album covers I've seen for ages.

Adam Warrock - Make Your Parents Proud

Posted by:
Eugene Ahn, better known as Adam Warrock has written a heartfelt and honest piece for the website, youoffendmeyouoffendmyfamily.com.  In the article, Ahn explains his motivation for quitting his job as a lawyer and taking on the challenge of becoming a full time indie rapper.
"From a logical standpoint, I believed I could be more successful as an indie musician than a lawyer, if you take gross income out of the equation. Call it delusion, but I truly believed that, and still do. I made plans to quit, budgeted out how much money to save, figured I’d stay until the end of the year and collect my bonus."
To read the full article, and I strongly recommend that you do, follow the link below.  It's truly insightful and a warning at the ramifications of taking this kind of risk as Ahn mentions the amount of debt he's amassed chasing his dream.

Mega Ran - Language Arts Kickstarter

Posted by:
Random, aka MegaRan, has been working on an album project titled, Language Arts, for the best part of three years.  Over this time the project has changed significantly but Random is now at a point where completing the project is achievable with a little help from his fans.

Language arts is no longer just an album.  In fact the music will be released over three EPs.  There's more.  Accompanying the musical side will be a comic book and a video game, all of which will compliment each other.

At the time of writing, Random has achieved his target of $3000, so the project will go ahead.  But with 29 days left to run there's still time to pledge.

Adam Warrock - Ghostal

Posted by:
It feels like only a matter of minutes since Adam Warrock last released some music, and that can only be a good thing.  His free EPs come often and with predictable quality.  On his website Warrock describes the inspiration behind this latest offering:

"I just finished a month and a half straight of traveling, and I got on this kick of watching old Adult Swim shows to fall asleep, when I was in hotel rooms or curled up on someone’s couch or sleeping in a dumpster (finding dumpsters near AC adapters.... The worst). It’s funny, because I think ever since Adult Swim was ubiquitous in the geeky scene, it’s always been a weird comfort in every phase of my life, from college, to grad school, to work, and now, to touring as a musician. So I just spun a few tracks off of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, and wanted to make a little homage to Williams Street, for being that kind of comfort."

Ryan Stinson - Futura

Posted by:
During a brief stay in Vancouver, Ryan Stinson had the opportunity to work with The Henry Hudson Elementary School Choir.  He incorporated their input into his latest release, Futura, in what is described as a 'transformation of sound' that takes the choir in a whole different direction.

Released through Phonographique, Stinson has produced five tracks of ambient, drum-break, hip-hop influenced tracks, three of which (Melt, Move On and Rain) feature the school choir. Track two, Melt, also features the vocals of acclaimed rapper, Ghettosocks.

Futura was made possible thanks to financial assistance from the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

The EP is available to download, you 'name your price', though 50% of proceeds from this release will be donated to The Henry Hudson Elementary School Choir so that they may maintain their program.
