The classic English folklore tale of a heroic archer is brought to the large screen once again in Robin Hood.
Robin Hood, the tale of a skilled archer and swordsman who stole from the rich and gave to the poor has been translated for the screen, both large and small, more times than I care to remember.
The most famous adaptation of recent times was released in 1991, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starred Kevin Costner and that song by Bryan Adams.
But there have been so many others before and since. I recall UK television had Robin of Sherwood (1984) and the children’s show (which can also be enjoyed by adults, it’s great) Maid Marian and her Merry Men from the early 1990’s.
The BBC aired the series Robin Hood in 2006 and Russell Crowe played the titular character in the 2010 film of the same name directed by Ridley Scott. I’d forgotten about that last one!
After a break of seven years, we have another adaptation this time starring Taron Egerton (Kingsmen: The Secret Service) as Robin Hood with Jamie Foxx (Baby Driver). The traditional bad guy, the Sheriff of Nottingham, is played by Ben Mendelsohn (Star Wars: Rogue One, Ready Player One).
This first trailer does reveal a rather slick and flashy looking adaptation but will it actually contain anything new and original compared to the others? We’ll have to wait and see.
