Childish Gambino – This Is America | Video

Childish Gambino sends a strong visual message in a new video for the track ‘This Is America’, but it’s the details you miss that tell the whole story.

Under his rap pseudonim – Childish Gambino – Donald Glover has been earning increasing plaudits for the hard hitting messages portrayed in his latest video.

The rapper/comedian/actor, set to appear in this month’s blockbuster ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story‘ in which he plays a young Lando Calrissian, has seemingly chosen the perfect moment in his career to send out a bold statement that tackles tough subjects prominent in America today.

Through exaggerated dance moves and facial expressions Gambino diverts viewers attention from the much bleaker picture being painted in the background. Police, riots and people filming as events unfold on their mobile phones are all snapshots of societal disharmony that is becoming more and more common in America.

Shocking moments see the rapper take on sudden changes of character as gun control forms the central message. We see Gambino shooting a man in the back of the head and then gunning down a gospel choir as they sing the lyric “Grandma told me: get your money, black man”.

The video has promoted discussion and critique leading The Guardian to herald it as a “satirical masterpiece”. The video amassed over ten million views in 24 hours.
