The end of 2016 turned crazy for Coins, aka Peter Project, when his two year old mixtape blew up in mainstream media.
In July 2014 Coins, a Toronto DJ/ Producer released Daft Science, a finely crafted blend of reworked Daft Punk music with Beastie Boys vocals. The release turned out to be something of a slow burner.
Having mustered only a few hundred downloads after release Daft Science finally found its audience towards the tail end of 2016 when major media outlets started circulating the 8 track mashup.
With Esquire, A.V. Club, Time, DJ Mag and any music blog worth its sort picked up on the album, soon Daft Science was exceeding download limits on bandcamp forcing Coins to set the release to streaming only to avoid the cost of paying for extra downloads of a free release.
Building on the success of Daft Science, Coins is back with a new mixtape bearing the catchy title: The Exploding Hot Death Lava Mixtape.
Fans of the producer’s alter ego, Peter Project, will be familiar with much of the music included in the 30 minute mix. You’ll find a spattering of Daft Science alongside some of Toronto and Halifax’s finest rappers.
Frequent collaborator Wordburglar is present as are fellow rappers More or Les, Swamp Thing (with whom Peter Project produced the album Planet Mirk), Ghettosocks, Jesse Dangerously and Ultramagnus.
Beyond the Canadian connection you’ll find other recognisable gems all seamlessly spliced together to form a flawless half hour of hip-hop.
Coins will be joining us for a podcast interview very soon. Stay tuned.
