Dan Dare: Pilot Of The Future Returns To Comics

Dan Dare: Pilot Of The Future Returns To Comics

An integral part of British science fiction returns to comics this October. Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future written by Peter Milligan comes to Titan Comics.

Whilst a lot of british kids were raised on 2000AD, the Beano and Dandy, I was given The Eagle each wednesday. Filled with comic strips featuring aliens, stories of toys that came to life and World War One fictions. The main attraction, however, was always ‘Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future’.

My Eagle was the eighties resurrection of a comic that started in the ’40s. Like me, my father had been raised on the stories for boys held within the pages of the weekly comic. And like me, my father was sucked into the future where astronaut, Dan Dare, would face the ever present threat of The Mekon, a small green tyrant, hell bent on destruction.

Now, in 2017, The Pilot of the Future returns. This time written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Alberto Fouche and published by Titan Comics.

“Dan Dare is one of the best-known (and loved) British comic book characters. Originally created by the Reverend Marcus Morris and visionary illustrator Frank Hampson, Dan Dare thrilled audiences through his lengthy run in the pages of Eagle Comics and 2000AD with its epic, planetary sagas, rip-roaring high-adventure and beautifully illustrated comic-strip art by Hampson and a slew of legendary artists including Frank Bellamy, Don Harley and Keith Watson. Dan Dare Corporation via Curtis Brown Group Ltd, London, licenses the character.

In Titan Comics’ new tale, the SOL SYSTEM is at peace for the first time in human history and Dan Dare doesn’t know what to do with himself.

When an unknown alien vessel of biblical proportions arrives in the solar system and obliterates a moon of Saturn in a show of strength, Dare finds himself thrust back into a new adventure that threatens not just Earth – but all life in the entire universe!”

The style of artwork appears to be a modernisation on the iconic imagery (incidentally to be found on a retro variant cover), which is a little disheartening. But Dan Dare is joined by his trusty sidekicks, Digby and Professor Peabody.

Fingers crossed the pairing of Milligan and Fouche can reignite some of the magic I enjoyed as a boy in this sci-fi classic.

Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future #1 goes on sale on October 11th.
