With a much darker tone ‘Logan’ finds an aged Wolverine, a vulnerable Professor X and introduces Nathaniel Essex and X-23.
With Deadpool paving the way for a new era of R rated superhero movies it looks like the Wolverine series is taking a much more sombre tone in this third solo movie for the character. Titled simply as ‘Logan’ we find Hugh Jackman returning as ‘Weapon X’ in a much older and more jaded form. Taking cues perhaps from the current ‘Old Man Logan’ series from Marvel Comics.
In the trailer we learn that the film takes place in a post-mutant world. Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Charles Xavier. With Professor X suffering the effects of alzheimer’s and Logan’s healing powers fading the pair seek help from a young girl, Laura Kinney.
Stephen Merchant seems like an odd choice of casting as the film’s antagonist, Nathaniel Essex, aka ‘Mister Sinister’. Though having seen a recent image of the actor in costume I’m beginning to change my opinion. ‘Sinister’ leads a corporation intent on the destruction of the world.
The introduction of the Laura Kinney character is something I’m quite excited about. In the comics Kinney aka ‘X-23’ is a clone copy of Wolverine exhibiting the same healing factor, enhanced strength and senses, Adamantium claws and killer instinct. If done right a spin-off ‘X-23’ franchise could be a fantastic addition to the X-Men movie universe.
