Pop culture is well represented in this year’s Oscars with Mad Max: Fury Road receiving ten, but The Revenant leads with twelve.
With an impressive twenty two Oscar nominations between them both Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant will go head to head for the Best Picture award this year alongside The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, Room and Spotlight. In fact the two films will pair off in no fewer than nine categories including the awards for Cinematography, Directing, Costume Design and Sound Editing. Bridging the gap between the films is actor Tom Hardy who plays the titular character in Mad Max: Fury Road but receives a nomination himself for Actor In A Supporting Role for The Revenant.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is breaking all kinds of cinematic records, but perhaps left it a little late to make a major impact on The Oscars. The film still gained a few nominations for Film Editing, Original Score and Visual Effects.
Whilst The Martian is well represented too, notably for Adapted Screenplay and Visual Effects, another fan favourite Sci-Fi movie also received recognition as Ex Machina received a nomination for Original Screenplay. Also in this category as well as Animated Feature Film is Pixar’s Inside Out. The company have often been overlooked at major awards ceremonies, in particular The Oscars.
