RoboCop is set to return to the big screen with a long sequel / reboot to the original 1987 movie starring Peter Weller.
Currently in development, the film titled ‘Robocop Returns’ is reported to be a reworking of a script originally penned as the sequel to the first ‘RoboCop’ directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1987.
Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are the pair responsible for writing ‘RoboCop’. Subsequent to the success of the film a script for a sequel was drafted. For various reasons that version of the film was never made, instead two unrelated sequels were release which saw the decline of the franchise.
The 2014 RoboCop reboot took out the dark humour of the original
In 2014 we saw a ‘RoboCop’ reboot directed by José Padilha. Whilst it wasn’t terrible, it lacked the dark satire and comic book violence that made the first unique.
Now Deadline reports that MGM have hired ‘District 9’ director, Neill Blomkamp, to direct ‘RoboCop Returns’.
Justin Rhodes (known most recently for writing the new Terminator reboot) is on hand to rework Neumeier and Miner’s script as the studio strives to make a spiritual sequel to the 1987 original.
Interestingly, in the Deadline article it appears that Neumeier and Miner’s draft script predicted that a reality star would become president of the United States. Fast forward to 2018 and that’s exactly what’s happened with Trump.
