Spider-Man. There’s A New Web Slinger In Town

Sony and Marvel have their new Spider-Man for a film set to be directed by Jon Watts.

Yep! It’s another Spider-Man reboot but with the added bonus of actually being produced in part by Marvel. Though the five Sony Pictures Spidey-Films have proven to be their highest earning franchise to date, making some $4 Billion, the films have always come under scrutiny with an inevitable voice of discontent. The new Sony/Marvel team-up hopes to rectify this and they today unveiled two key components of their plan for success. Up and coming director Jon Watts was announced to lead the movie. He has a movie due out called Cop Car. Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Chairman, Tom Rothman has high praise for Watts saying “I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.

Most interesting though was the announcement of the new lead. Barely a ‘man’ at all the new Spider-Man was announced as Wolf Hall actor, nineteen year old, Tom Holland. An athletic and energetic character, Holland will play Peter Parker / Spider-Man.

Producer Amy Pascal explains the thought behind the casting, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
