It’s February! It’s the United States! It’s that time of year again! Nah, sod the Super Bowl! New movie trailers!

Well, the heading says it all. Once again the largest sporting event in America hits the airwaves. The movie studios take advantage of the multi-million viewership and tease their upcoming blockbusting movies of the year.

If available, I will post the longer extended versions of the trailers that become available online. As always, in no particular order, let’s begin.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The space adventuring gang return with our official third look at the sequel to the surprise summer hit of 2014. So far the marketing for this film has been, in my opinion, perfect and this Super Bowl tease continues that tradition. An abundance of beautiful footage but as of yet we still have no idea as to what the main plot entails.

In an effort to find something original to bring to our cinema screens, the movie studios have started to look through their old television properties. Two of the most recent “inspirations” are CHiPS (yes, I’m using the original connotations!) and Baywatch.

Whereas the original Baywatch was a drama about life as a Los Angeles lifeguard, this new version is going “balls out” as an R-rated comedy.

Release | US: 26th May | UK: 2nd June | World: IMDb

John Wick: Chapter 2

What can I say about John Wick that I haven’t mentioned already on these hallowed web pages. The original is a brilliant action film that definitely deserves more recognition.

Whilst this Super Bowl spot doesn’t reveal new material, it serves to remind that a highly anticipated sequel is almost upon us.

Release | US: 10th February | UK: 17th February | World: IMDb

The Fate Of The Furious

The Fast And The Furious franchise powers on with an ever growing cast of big name actors. By the looks of this Super Bowl tease, we have Vin Diesel, of course, he is joined by Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Kurt Russel and Michelle Rodriguez.

How could they top such a cast, well the action looks positively mental! There’s cars being pushed out of tall buildings, some kind of battle tank and a car vs submarine showdown!

Release | US: 14th April | UK: 14th April | World: IMDb

Hugh Jackman reprises his most famous role as the mutant Logan, more famously known as Wolverine, the man with the adamantium claws and amazing regenerative capabilities.

Set in 2029, Logan’s abilities are failing him. He spends his days working as a chauffeur and looking after Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart). However, a stranger asks him to meet a little girl, known as X-23, who has the same abilities as Logan. Logan must protect her from the sinister men trying to obtain her DNA which links her to himself.

This will be the first R-rated film in the X-Men franchise which was decided upon after the huge success of Deadpool.

Release | US: 3rd March | UK: 1st March | World: IMDb

Transformers: The Last Knight

After the initial excitement of a live action Transformers wore off, these films, in my opinion, seem to be getting worse. However, who cares about the views of a forty something nerd from the UK!

The last film in the franchise, the fourth so far, Transformers: Age of Extinction, brought in over a billion dollars at the box office!

Michael Bay recently stated that this will be the last Transformers film he directs and judging by the trailer there will be plenty of loud and large action with plenty of “Bay-splosions!”

Release | US: 23rd June | UK: 23rd June | World: IMDb

Ghost In The Shell

The slightly controversial live-action remake of the classic anime series, Ghost In The Shell, gets a short tease with the release of some new imagery in this trailer.

No, Scarlett Johannson is not naked, I expect that is all CGI! Despite not having an interest in the original source material, I’m still looking forward to seeing this science fiction adventure.

Release | US: 31st March | UK: 31st March | World: IMDb

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Johnny Depp returns as everyone’s favourite pirate, Jack Sparrow. This fifth entry in the franchise also sees the return of Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).

As mentioned previously this one-minute teaser reveals little of the plot but a lot of great CGI work particularly involving the ghost Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who is on a quest to kill all pirates. To stop him, Jack Sparrow must find the legendary  Trident of Poseidon.

Release | US: 26th May | UK: 26th May | World: IMDb

Ryan Reynolds and Jake Jake Gyllenhaal star in this science fiction horror film. In this film, the international space station retrieves one of the only probes that has returned from a mission to Mars.

Within the samples, they discover evidence of life. However, that life soon starts to grow and soon puts the crew of the space station into incredible danger.

Whilst this looks intriguing, I would like to know how if at all, this will differ from any other “monster on a space station” film that has come before it.

Release | US: 24th March | UK: 24th March | World: IMDb

A Cure For Wellness

A young executive (Dane DeHaan) is sent to an idyllic “wellness centre” to retrieve the CEO of the company that he works for. However, when he arrives there, the treatments offered at this centre are from what they seem.

Directed by Gore Verbinski, who has brought us three of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Rango and The Lone Ranger, this certainly has a unique look to it.

Netflix gave us a sneak tease at the second season of Stranger Things which will premiere on their service later this year at Halloween. Having binge-watched this series in just two days recently, I am looking forward to the further adventures of 11 and the A.V. club members.

Finally, here’s an impressive trailer for some kind of historical epic starring Jeffery Dean Morgan, Fan Bingbing and Aaron Eckhart.

That’s right, this beautifully shot, star-laden trailer was for a tablet based strategy game!? Where do these companies get their marketing budgets from?

That just about rounds up 2017’s Super Bowl film trailers. See you again in about a year!
