Director Ridley Scott returns once again to the classic sci-fi franchise he started in 1979. This is our first look at Alien: Covenant.
The Alien franchise has had it’s ups and downs over the years, unfortunately, more downs than ups! So here’s a brief history of the franchise.
Ridley Scott directed Alien in 1979, which was followed by Aliens, directed by James Cameron, in 1986, both highly regarded as classic films. Then the franchise started to go downhill.
Alien3 released in 1992 spent several years in development hell and the final product is admirable considering the limitations pushed upon its first time director, David Fincher.
Alien: Ressurection directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and released in 1997 has some good ideas but the film wasn’t the big success the studios wanted. However, this didn’t stop them looking for more ideas to continue the franchise.
To sum up, both Alien vs. Predator from 2004 and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem released in 2007 were both bitterly disappointing considering how long the comics have been successfully using this combination of classic movie monsters.
In 2013, Ridley Scott returned to create Prometheus, a prequel to the original Alien film set thirty years beforehand which explored the origins of the alien creature.
Now in 2017, Ridley Scott has directed Alien: Covenant, a sequel to Prometheus. There have been several sneak peeks for journalists recently who have reported that this film is a return to the horror roots of the original.
