The Big Bang Theory To End After Season Twelve

The Big Bang Theory To End After Season Twelve

The hugely successful nerd-centric comedy The Big Bang Theory to end after season Twelve

The Big Bang Theory premiered on CBS over a decade ago in September of 2007. The comedy show followed the lives of two nerdy roommates, Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), an experimental physicist and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), a theoretical physicist.

The first season also featured Leonard’s crush, the aspiring actress Penny (Kaley Cuoco) who moves into the flat across the hall. And finally, there are Leonard and Sheldon’s best friends, Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), an aerospace engineer and Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), a particle astrophysicist.

As the show continued, more regulars joined the cast including Howard’s girlfriend Bernadette (Melissa Raunch) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) who becomes the love interest for Sheldon.

The comedy was quite geek-centric with all the boys having a love for all things sci-fi including Star Trek and Star Wars with many references to those and other similar franchises.

Over the years, the shows content matter has allowed for many guest appearances from both scientists and actors. Most notable was Wil Wheaton who has made many appearances as Sheldon’s nemesis but you can’t forget the others including real-life scientists Neil deGrasse Tyson and Stephen Hawking and most recently an appearance from Mark Hamill.

After some research, when we were discovering that my son was possibly autistic, I came to realise that Sheldon is quite clearly someone who is on the autistic spectrum. I applaud the show for having the main character autistic, it’s just a shame it’s never once actually stated as such.

The Big Bang Theory series has so far won 56 awards from 216 nominations and spawned a prequel series, Young Sheldon.

But all good things must come to an end. Despite reports just a few weeks ago that several more seasons were being considered, CBS and Warner Bros. released this statement.

“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

After eleven seasons with several of the main characters having children and getting married, I welcome this final season as it definitely feels the show has run its course.

The reason for this decision to end The Big Bang Theory has come about because actor Jim Parsons has decided to leave the show. CBS offered him what would amount to $50 million for another two seasons, but as you can probably understand, after ten years of the same show, Jim wants to move onto other projects.

The final season of The Big Bang Theory will start on September 24th on CBS.
