The Geekend Review | taking a look back at the last week’s geek news.

Geekend Review

The Geekend Review, “the cool form of uncool before uncool became a thing”. We take a look at some of the more exciting news stories to have dropped over the last week.

It seems a week can’t pass without more casting news for Batman V Superman being revealed and the same could be said for building block giants Lego releasing yet another amazing pop-culture themed set.

Also this week we have some amazing new footage of Felix Baumgartner’s incredible jump from the Earth’s stratosphere courtesy of GoPro and some sad news that dropped today as Hollywood loses another great actor.

Lex Luthor And Alfred Cast For Batman Vs Superman

Another week passes and once more there’s news from the Batman V Superman camp as two more characters are cast. Causing less of a ripple is the news that Jeremy Irons is to play Bruce Wayne’s trusty butler Alfred. Wayne’s confidante has most recently been portrayed on-screen by iconic actor Michael Caine in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. It seems almost certain that Irons’ approach to the role will be very different from Caine’s.

Less well received is the news that Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor. Eisenberg is best know for his role as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in ‘The Social Network‘. As with the news that Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman in the film, fans have greeted the casting of Lex Luthor with a certain amount of contempt.

Who You Gonna Call When You’re Money’s All Gone?

Because those evil bastards at Lego have done it again. As John Abbit reported earlier this week the latest Cuusoo System project to get the green light is a Ghostbusters set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie. The Cuusoo System is an initiative that allows fans to upload designs for consideration by Lego. Fans vote on their favourites with proposals receiving 10,000 votes or more receiving an official review from Lego. “The set was designed by Brent Waller and uploaded in March 2013 so you get an idea of how long the system can take. As you can see from the pictures, the set will include the ECTO-1 vehicle and a full set of four Ghostbusters.” See John’s article here.

Felix Baumgartner | Red Bull Stratos | The Full Story

New footage was released this week of Felix Baumgartner’s jump from the Earth’s stratosphere. Seven GoPro Hero2 camera’s tell the full story of this incredible feat. See the truly terrifying first person footage as Baumgartner plunges twenty four mile towards the Earth.

Philip Symour Hoffeman | 1967 – 2014

News dropped today that Hollywood actor Philip Symour Hoffman was found dead this morning in New York at the age of 46. Official reports suggest that his death was the result of a drug overdose.

Hoffman rose to fame in the 90s following appearances in films including Boogie Nights and the Big Lebowski. He went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of Truman Capote in 2005. Other roles saw him appear in Mission Impossible III and most recently The Hunger Games series.
