Voltron Is Back As A Netflix And Dreamworks Collaboration

The popular mid-eighties cartoon series gets a Netflix reboot as Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Originally adapted from a Japanese anime, the cartoon series Voltron first found popularity when the show originally aired between 1984 and 85. Episodes would follow the adventures of five young men, who pilot flying mechanical Lions that would combine to form the giant robot ‘Voltron’, and the princess of the planet Arus. Voltron would battle monster villains using its trademark flaming sword.

More than thirty years on, Voltron is back as a Netflix exclusive series in collaboration with Dreamworks Animation. Dreamworks and Netflix have a previous relationship with their hugely popular How to Train Your Dragon animated series, a spin-off from the movies of the same name.

Titled Voltron: Legendary Defender the rebooted series maintains a similar aesthetic to the source material with the same characters featured but some minor updates and modernisations. Whilst the feel of the show will be familiar to fans the series is set to take on a more serialised format.

Thirteen episodes are due to hit Netflix on June 10th.

Five Earth teens – Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro – who become the last line of defense for the galaxy in an intergalactic battle against the evil alien force led by King Zarkon.
