To say that Kevin Smith’s movies are hit or miss is rather stating the obvious. So how will his latest film ‘Yoga Hosers’ fare? A movie aiming for a tween audience.
Kevin Smith has made a movie for tweens. Not something many would have predicted from a film that forms the filling in his ‘True North Trilogy’ and follows ‘Tusk’. Released in 2014 ‘Tusk’ was Smith’s first installment of the three in which an unwitting podcaster (Justin Long) is captured by an interviewee with a desire to create a human Walrus. The movie sits squarely in the horror genre.
Yoga Hosers is aiming at a much wider audience having received a tween friendly rating in the U.S. Starring Smith’s own daughter, Harley-Quinn Smith and her best friend, Lily-Rose Depp – Yep, Johnny Depp’s offspring – the film follows the exploits of two teenage yoga enthusiasts who enlist unusual help to battle an unusual evil presence.
Plot aside, the film has much in common with ‘Tusk’. Smith is famous for using the same actors in multiple movies. Proving the point, Justin Long and Haley Joel Osment both return for Yoga Hosers along with the afore mentioned Daddy Depp, daughter Depp and Daughter Smith. On an aside the movie will also see Stan Lee feature.
Another common connection between the two movies is that they were both conceived on Smith’s ‘SModcast Podcast’ alongside long-time friend and former collaborator Scott Mosier. Trawl through the SModcast archives and you’ll come across the moments when a stoned Smith and – likely- passively stoned Mosier roll-played the initial ideas behind the plots of both films.
Details for distribution for Yoga Hosers are still in the works but Smith has stated that he will be touring the film in the U.S. giving Q&A’s to audiences who attend special screenings.
